Batman wears black so he blends with the night. He also hides his face behind a mask so no one will know who he really is. He does not want the bad guys to see him coming. However, his suit is sleek, clean, and shiny. This represents his desire to clean-up the crime in Gotham.
The way he stands out is with his morals. Batman wants justice. He wants the gangsters of Gotham to be put away in jail. However, this movies is different from the other Batman movies in that Batman seems to be comfortable with killing some bad guys. So is Michael Keaton’s Batman different from the other citizens of Gotham when he really wants vengeance for the death of his parents? He does murder many, many henchmen…
This movie presents Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) as an oddity in Gotham. He grew-up there, but he seems to be just as much of a phenomenon as Batman. He does not participate much in the city and seems to keep mostly to himself. “Some guy named Wayne” does not fit in with the grimy city because he has money, lives in a shiny castle, and appears to do no harm. Of any of the characters, I think he fits in the least.
His clothes may standout, but his philosophy fits in with the violence and crime Gotham is known for. He fries one of his criminal colleagues just because he resists what the Joker wants. Then he poisons a lot of products to make the people of Gotham laugh themselves to death. These acts, along with his obnoxious smile, make him a mad, mass murderer who other murderers only dream of becoming.
Gotham City has many unique citizens, and many people argue Batman and Joker are total opposites. But maybe in this movie, they have more in common than other movies. Batman does kill, like Joker. However, their philosophies are as different as their appearances.
On a side note, why does Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) seem to have a problem with her shoes? She is constantly barefoot, even when outside. I find it strange but cannot explain it…
Watching this movie years after its release, audiences lost the awe of it. However, those who saw the original screenings still attract to it.
And the Geeks have spoken!
