Take Batty (Robin Williams) for example. He was experimented on in “a biology lab” to the point he can hardly hold a train of thought. Humans attached wires to his head. For what purpose? Who knows…
Crysta (Samantha Mathis) thinks “the leveler” is a “horrible monster”. She has never been around machines before and does not understand that humans are controlling it.
When the Leveler releases Hexxus (Tim Curry), he uses the gases from the machine to grow. Magi (Grace Zabriskie) says, “There are no poisons [in FernGully] in which he can feed on.” However, the Leveler offers “a first class smoke, mother’s milk” to nourish him.
Though the smoke is what makes him strong, a simple turn of a key can be his undoing. Without the “energy” to help him, he can be trapped by a “simple, tiny seed”. Toxins from technology make him powerful, but nature makes him vulnerable.
Technology can be a wonderful and terrible thing all at once. I don’t want to harp on the deforestation problem this movie addresses, but machines have played a major role in that issue. It is always good to remember the bad with the good.
When looking for positive female role models and the stripping away of gender boundaries, FernGully may be exactly what you want to watch.
