As an educator, I find the representations of education and school interesting. Let’s take a look.
So the first glimpse we get into the education system of Salem is when the teacher is telling the legend of the “Sanderson sisters”. Education on Halloween is based around local stories. I like this for the cultural aspect, but then it also seems like a waste of a school day.
The kids decide to trap the witches in the pottery furnace in the high school. Jacob Bailey High School “reeks of children. It is a prison for children.” Kids get trapped here, but witches do not.
I believe if the witches had lived until “the twentieth century”, they would have been educator and possibly administrators. The family consumer science room would be unique with many interesting vials in the cupboards. And many extracurricular activities would have been introduced as innocent.
And this would be the ultimate place for them to live. Nothing could harm them, not even a pottery furnace.
While I know there are many highly qualified teachers in the world who work hard to improve education, there are many who take the job as something “easy” to do with their lives. I imagine the Sanderson sisters would have used the education system in a unique way.
I strive to not follow this stereotypical, disappointing idea. I try to be engaging and interesting with all of my classroom endeavors.
