Elsa (Idina Menzel) demonstrates traits of paranoid personality disorder. She is definitely guarded and suspicious. She is so scared her powers will hurt someone again that she closes herself off. Also, she does not want to strike others with “fear”; Elsa wants to be accepted, not chased away. Her fear turns to humiliation and, after showing her true powers, she withdraws to a mountain to escape society.
Borderline personality disorder can be found in Anna (Kristen Bell). It is termed borderline because it has symptoms of a combination of disorders. She appears to be a bit schizophrenic when she “start[s] talking to the pictures on the walls”. Borderline personality disorder also involves impulsiveness and unstable relationships. Anna does get engaged to Hans (Santino Fontana) alarmingly quick. She is even more than happy to run off alone in a snow storm, attempt to climb a mountain, and jump into a “100 foot drop” off a cliff. Although these are no actual attempts at suicide, an on looker could interpret these actions as steps towards suicide.
The schizotypal disorder is shown through Olaf. He most definitely has magical thinking; he “loves the idea of summer and sun and all things hot” even though he is a snowman. Although he has no issue with meeting people, he does have awkward social cues. He thinks it is acceptable to say “I’ve been impaled” and giggle. And he has no emotion when he points out he has “no scull or bones”. These are not exactly normal, everyday things to say.
Although I do not assert that all of these characters exhibit the anti-social characteristics of these disorders, they do fit into them in some way. This is mostly due to their lack of interaction with society. In reality, most people fit into one of these disorders, or the other 5 not mentioned, in some way.
Other ideas on the movies I write about are always welcome, but some of the 7 hidden meanings may be a bit farfetched…
Always keep in mind there are many interpretations to any movie, book, story, or situation. No one is exactly correct.
