Now the first act of acquiring loyalty, although it is forcibly, is when Loki (Tom Hiddleston) sticks Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) with his spear. He does not earn their loyalty; he takes it by literally penetrating their “heart”.
There are many different forms of earning trust in this movie. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) sends a little girl for the doctor. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) provides an enemy. Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) befriends a woman, who convinces her lover.
Some loyalty is just understood. In this move, we don’t know why Black Widow and Hawkeye are loyal to each other, but we know they are. Black Widow has “red in her ledger” which makes her want to keep him close. Maybe it is more of a debt than loyalty, but either way we know they respect each other. Maybe a movie for them would clear this up? Let’s hope for such extended-action fun!
Agent Coulson actually earns all their respect by being involved in all of their lives through their own movies. He leans about them and discovers why they would work with the Avengers team. With Captain America (Chris Evans), he earns his trust and respect by being an adoring yet respectful fan. He also gains Thor (Chris Hemsworth) because he moves his lady to a safe place.
A common enemy and the loss of a friend bring this team together. They show loyalty to each other and their cause by (duh) saving the world and each other’s lives! Now that they have spent half a movie fighting each other, they know their strengths and play off of those to eliminate the alien enemy.
Once they are formed, they do not weaver. Respect for a fallen comrade fashions a loyal team.
This analysis shows us that something as simple as a mutual friend’s death can bring together a group of completely different people to fight for what’s right: freedom! And life! And all that jazz.
