All of the women in the orphanage are pretty powerful. Both Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) and all the girls in the orphanage are strong females. While Miss Hannigan wants a man, she does not need one. Even when women are not supposed to be seen as sexual creatures, she pursues Mr. Bundles (Irving Metzman). She gets the urge for a “tumble with the bundle” and expresses those desires without shame.
Miss Hannigan actually has a lot of wealth compared to the rest of the nation. She acts like her money is extremely limited, but she has a radio, a rich piece of technology for the time, and alcohol. This represents that even though she is a woman she has some sort of wealth.
And despite her faults, she still sticks up for Annie in the end. She tries to saver her because “she’s a baby”.
The girls are independent. They have no problem fighting against Miss Hannigan, helping Annie (Aileen Quinn) escape, or running away to try to “save Annie”.
Annie escapes the orphanage multiple times and even beats up boys to defend a dog. Although she is a girl, she has no problem being strong and defending what she thinks it right.
Grace is a wonderful woman who can influence a man when needed. When Mr. Warbucks (Albert Finney) wants to deny Annie, Miss Farrell defuses the situation. She takes his specific and slightly crazy requests in stride.
As even in history, Eleanor Roosevelt (Lois De Banzie) is a strong, knowledgeable female. She advocates for her husband, Frederic D. Roosevelt (Edward Herrmann).
The exception to this rule is Lily St. Regis (Bernadette Peters). She cannot exist without Rooster (Tim Curry). He is the one successful in stealing money from his sister and he appears to be the mastermind behind their plot to act as Annie’s parents. Lily is simply a tag-along.
While the major setback for these women is their obvious desire for male approval, I would still argue they have strong personality types.
While all of the men in this film presented are fairly powerful, I cannot help but notice there are more important female characters and they hold a wider birth of powerful attributes than the men.
An analysis of all the characters is always interesting!
