From the very beginning, Hermione chooses to wipe her parent’s memories to keep them safe. It is sad and difficult, but she feels it is necessary.
Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) chooses whose wand to take. He could have had Ollivander (John Hurt) make him a new one. However, he chooses to assert his power and dominance by taking Lucius Malfoy’s (Jason Isaacs) wand.
The Order of the Phoenix decides where and when Harry is to be moved. When moving Harry to the Burrow, the Death Eaters have a lot of “Harrys” to choose from themselves. Choices offer up the opportunity for mistakes as well as victories. Not sure if this scene was a failure or victory...
Dumbledore had the choice of what to leave our heroes. Ron gets the “deluminator” “in the hope that when things seem most dark, it will show you the light”. Hermione receives “The Tales of Beetle the Bard in the hope that she find[s] it entertaining and instructive”. Harry gets “the snitch he caught in his first Quidditch match at Hogwarts as a reminder of the rewards of perseverance and skill”. Also left to Harry was supposed to be the Sword of Godric Gryffindor. However, he does not receive it when sitting with the Minister of Magic.
Also, Hermione is always the one thinking of where they apparate to. An avenue, a forest, a beach, Grimmauld Place, everywhere.
Hermione, Ron, and Harry have the choice of which Ministry people to disguise themselves as. This turns out to be both a good and bad thing. They do find Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) quickly. However, they face obstacles along the way, like Ron needing to make it stop raining in an office and Hermione being dragged away with Umbridge. But ultimately their choice works out and they get the locket.
Even Ron makes a wild decision. He chooses to leave Harry and Hermione. Yes, the horcrux was making everyone a little crazy, but he did choose to leave them. However, he does choose to come back, too.
Hermione and Harry choose to go to Godric’s Hollow. This proves to be one of the really bad decisions. Hermione breaks Harry’s wand. However, had they not gone there, would they have ended up in the place where they find Ron again?
Xenophilius Lovegood (Rhys Ifans) chooses his daughter over the famous Harry Potter. He may have mad respect for Harry, but he has insane love for his dear daughter.
Dobby (Toby Jones) chooses to do all he can for Harry and his friends, including ticking off Bellatrix (Helena Bonham Carter). It is unfortunate that he dies, but he does what he can to help.
The point of all of this is our characters made choices because that’s what needed to be done. No, each choice does not turn out to be perfect or entirely correct. But the characters had to make hard decisions and they did, for better or worse.
I didn’t find much on this movie on the internet (besides film reviews), but I did find a site with some interesting ideas about the filming of this movie. Not so much an analysis, but still interesting.
Thanks for reading! Come back next Thursday!
